Our Mission

Build knowledge that becomes useful action.

The JR Institute brings science, engineering, policy, design, and human experience together to address complex problems at their roots.

We develop ideas that institutions can test, deploy, measure, and improve. Our work is guided by intellectual independence, public benefit, responsible innovation, and the belief that major progress begins with the courage to examine systems as a whole.

“A legacy is not only what a person leaves behind. It is what their life continues to inspire.”
Janet's Legacy

An institution shaped by the life it honors.

The Institute is named for Janet Elizabeth Rieder-Henderson, whose professional life, curiosity, and personal example remain central to its identity.

Green and blue—the colors Janet frequently chose for her professional attire—now form the Institute's signature palette. Evergreen represents growth, preservation, and the natural world. Blue represents knowledge, stability, and exploration.

How We Work

From an important question to a working system.

01

Observe

Understand the complete system and the people living within it.

02

Research

Combine evidence, disciplines, lived experience, and new ideas.

03

Build

Translate knowledge into prototypes, policies, and deployable systems.

04

Improve

Measure outcomes, learn continuously, and strengthen what works.

Publications & Briefings

Ideas should move beyond the laboratory.

Institute reports, research briefs, policy analysis, project updates, and public education materials will make our work accessible to leaders, practitioners, partners, and communities.
